You would have remembered this place for its Japanese inspired rice bowls and the visually beautiful French toasts. Ninja Bowl at Duxton has recently added some new items to their all-day brunch menu so for those who are fans of this place, it’s time to check it out. You can still find some of the popular rice bowls on their menu, with additions of Mentaiko Scrambled Eggs, Steak & Udon, Aligot-o Gozaimasu, Ninja Okonomiyaki and Shinjuku Comfort. Serving a fusion of Asian European fusion, I am quite curious to see what this place has to offer
Flat White $5
House blend of using a combination of Colombian, Guatemalan and Ethiopian beans, the coffee was light with sour notes and acidic aftertaste, not something I know how to appreciate
Mentaiko Scrambled $18
Pan-seared Hokkaido Scallops, Mentaiko Scrambled Eggs, Edamame, Furikake, Toast
Well cooked scrambled with a touch of mentaiko. I like how they did not overpower the taste by adding too much mentaiko. The toast was very crispy, in fact it was so crispy I had a hard time slicing it
The scallops were delicious, well cooked with a taut chewy texture
Ninja Okonomiyaki $18
Mini Okonomiyaki Pancakes, 24-hour Braised Beef Cheek, Semi-dried Tomatoes, Poached Eggs, Red Ginger
To be fair, each dish tastes pretty decent on its own. The beef cheeks were well braised and nicely seasoned, the mini pancakes were a delight and the poached eggs had their yolk running. But when you place everything together, it feels like 3 strangers refusing to talk to each other. They just don’t click. Even the red ginger felt awkward standing next to them
Well, I think perhaps next time I should give the rice bowl a try instead. Sometimes being adventurous can be rewarding, but trying too hard at times in a undeniably very competitive cafe industry might just make you stand out for the wrong reasons
