We went down to support a friend’s restaurant, and ended up ordering so much food I think it probably covers half their menu. Located at the newly opened M Social Hotel, Beasts & Butterflies does a fusion of Asian dishes with their own take and improvisation. The place is quite a walk from the mrt, but I must say the size of the place is considerably large with a pool table no less. Yes, and you can play for free!
A design oriented restaurant
And the bar at the far end
Groupin $9 (left) Butterfly Kisses (Camomile infused Gin, Rosehip & Hibiscus Tea) $22 (right)
The cocktail sounded nice, but tasted rather strange
Ordered white wine cos it was rather cheap but the taste reflects as much too
Enchanted Garden $26
Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum, Water Melons, Pimm’s No.1, Citrus, Mint
So the friend recommended another drink but I think their cocktails in general are rather sweet. Just don’t fit my palate
Crispy Spinach with Garlic Powder $8
It’s not often you see fried spinach on the menu but I have no doubt these doesn’t fill you. It’s a nice snack to accompany your drinks but if you are looking for a snack to fill you, just forget about it
Truffle Cheese Fries $12
The taste of truffle was evident and evenly distributed
Spam Fries with Home-Made Basil Cheese Dip $10
The spam fries were slightly over-fried and I don’t get the dip. I thought the taste of basil was absent and the cheese was light in flavour in comparison
Chicken Popcorn Coated with Salted Egg Yolk $10
Well-fried popcorn chicken that gets pretty addictive after awhile
Boneless Wings Marinated with Five-Spiced Oyster Sauce $16
I like the marinate of the chicken and I love it more just cos it’s boneless. The chicken was nicely done and smoking hot
Fish Soup $18
Poached Salmon in Fish Broth and Spring Vegetables
A take on our local hawker centre fish soup. It’s well flavoured and infused with the beautiful taste of salmon and works well if you need something to sober up. But I think I can just stick with my local hawker centre fish soup
Full Hamhock $38
German-style Fried Pork Knuckle with nam jim sauce and the Asian sauerkraut
A crowd’s favourite. The pork knuckle was crispy and tender and we love the nam jin sauce which was a mix of salty, spicy and salty. The Asian sauerkraut has flavours of Asian spices and are less sour to their German counterpart
Lobster Porridge $28
Teochew Style Rice Porridge in Crab Broth with Lobster & Abalone
Feels like a dish for the health conscious. The lobster was a little tough and missing the sweetness. The broth is easily to fall in love with. Just give me the broth
Mee Tai Mak Laksa $16
Fresh Cherry Stone Clams & Shrimp, Sliver Needle Noodles Laksa with Crispy Tau Pok
We thought the laksa was decent but what we enjoyed more is the addition of (the whole plate of) sambal chilli
Chicken & Chorizo $26
Grilled Sous-Vide Chicken Breast with Chorizo Mashed Potatoes
Chicken was pretty normal and tender and nothing eventful. The chorizo mashed potatoes were interesting but I think the dish in general just fell flat
Beast Burger $28
Grilled U.S. Wagyu Beef Cheese Burger, Brown Onions, Home-Made B.B.Q. Sauce, Garlic Cheese Fries, Mesclun Salad, Sesame Dressing
The patty was juicy and soft. If you find the flavours a little bland, you can add more bbq sauce to it
Extravaganza $25
We decided to go with a platter of desserts to end the night and since we wanted to try everything, we had the Extravaganza, which was a little extravagant
Chocoholic
Chocolate and Banana sphere, Sichuan pepper sauce Passion Fruit Sorbet
Yoghurt & Lime Mousse with Almond Crumble
Sawadee
Mango Sticky Rice, Coconut Sauce, Black Sesame
Yam Brûlée with Coconut Icecream
I would say everyone has their own favourite. I thought the one that shone the most for me was the yam brûlée. The yam was smooth and not too sweet, nicely brûlée with a layer of caramel sugar was so satisfying
I thought the food here in general is pretty decent though there was a fair bit of hits and misses. I wouldn’t mind dropping by if I’m the area. I give credit to them for being different and trying to make your normal local and Asian dishes not so normal
