The friend brought me to Kairyu Omakase for my birthday lunch. Located at Neil road, this place was fully booked for a weekday lunch so it was actually pretty crowded. Priced at $78++, it included appetiser, seasonal dish, 7 pcs sushi, rice bowl, handroll, soup and dessert. From the sound of it, this price point did sound pretty reasonable so I was a little hesitant about the quality

Lunch usually take about 2 hours but the friend told them we need them to be done in 1.5 hours. Well, they did deliver in 1.5 hours

Appetiser came in the form of potato foam, tofu and sea bream roe. Appetiser was simple, nothing too fancy yet comforting in its own way. The potato foam served warm, was smooth and creamy, seabream roe with seasonal vegetables was not bad either. The roes had a smooth texture to them which run well on the palate

Cubed gari had a slight juicy texture

Seasonal Dish – Hotaru Ika with Tamago

This was not bad but I found the Hotaru Ika a slight too mushy. Else, flavours generally was quite nice overall

Isaki

First piece of sushi was not bad. Rice was a little warm, the vinegar was well managed and the whole shari goes well with the fish to bring out the sweetness

Akami

Good texture, enjoyed the wasabi in it as well

Tairagai

Good crunch with overall balance of sweetness from the penshell

Sayori

I really liked the sayori. The spring onion brought out the entire flavour of the fish

Chutoro

Quite a decent piece of chutoro

Ama Ebi

Uni Ikura Rice Bowl

The uni ikura don was nothing to shout about but I thought it was slightly above average

Anago

Anago had quite a good texture which was smooth and a nice chew to it

Miso Soup

Very flavourful negitoro which was our last piece of sushi as well

Tamago which came in a form of cake which was quite yummy

I was pleasantly surprised by the quality given the price-point. I do think it’s quite reasonable for a lunch omakase and I left feeling quite full. It’s definitely one I don’t mind returning if I’m looking for a reasonably-priced omakase, for lunch or dinner
