Joining the array of restaurants on Tras Street is a new kid on the block. Don & Tori is a mixed of traditional and modern Japanese, with touch of western flavours on Japanese ingredients. Positioning itself as a cocktail and tapas joint, the restaurant is headed by Chef Jack Chang with guidance from Chef Raymond Tan (Sushi Jin) and Chef Max Lai (Sushi Murasaki) so don’t be surprised to see some familiar dishes in here
Dassai 50 $128
Was actually very happy to see Dassai in here, and they do have 39s and 23s as well
Fugu Mirin $14
Chicken Karaage $12
Deep fried chicken thigh that was executed perfectly
Foie Gras & Scallop $22
Pan Fried Foie Gras paired with Hokkaido Scallop topped with homemade Soya Sauce
Which honestly tasted not bad. It reminded me of Japanese fishcakes
Spicy Ebi Tempura & Negi Toro Maki $24
Truffle Negima & Ebi Tempura $24
Love the addition of the crispy tempura to give it an extra crunch, but I thought there was a little too much sauce in the chopped sashimi. Preferred the tuna to the amberjack, though you can’t really taste what you are eating as the spiciness tends to be a little overwhelming
Don’s Okonomiyaki $25
Signature Japanese Pizza with Prawn, Scallop & Cheese
Which was a little disappointing
Pork Belly Uzura $12
Quail Egg wrapped with Thinly Sliced Pork Belly
Probably not something you will expect the pork belly to wrap around. But I do love their rendition of grilled pork belly and quail eggs
Barbecue Squid with Ginger Sweet Sauce $22
Black Cod $28
Grilled Cod with Miso-Egg Sauce
The grilled cod has a nice fragrance. Pretty decent I would say, though it gets a little salty cos of the miso sauce
Lamb Rack $32
Grilled Lamb Rack in a Japanese Apple Sauce
We thought the lamb rack was pretty well done. Thin slices of lamb rack without the lamb taste in a sweet sauce
Truffle Wagyu Foie Gras Don $38
Seared Joshu Wagyu, French Foie Gras & Onsen Egg w Garlic Chips & Truffle Oil
And the best for the last. Mixing the onsen egg with the rice to give it a silky taste, with the oiliness of the foie gras and the charred taste of the tender wagyu beef slices. It tasted pretty delicious. We shared the donburi, so it wasn’t that overwhelming
Black Sesame Icecream $8
A little different from the usual black sesame icecream, the texture here is on the course-side. I feel that the black sesame icecream could be just a little stronger but otherwise it is a sweet end to the meal
Generally, the food here is decent. I would probably go back for their donburi or to share a drink with friends over bar bites. Some of the food here can be a little strong but I think generally it makes a good place to chill after work
