Located at Hotel Indigo, Baba Chews Bar & Eatery shared a common space with Goldleaf. We took awhile finding the restaurant just cos we couldn’t find any signage anywhere. This place serves some of Chef Sam Leong’s dishes (though I have never tried them before) and the friend has been egging me to try this place since they opened, so here we are on a Sunday for lunch
The first thing that caught my eye was the beautiful bar they displayed when you walk in. So pretty!
Love the interior and the Perankan inspired menu as well
Dining on a Sunday gives you the option of brunch or lunch. Brunch includes a spread of mains from European, Continental and Local selection including the usual Egg Benedicts, Pancakes, French Toast and also, their famous Nonya Laksa and Wanton Mee plus access to their limited buffet line. All these for $28++ per pax
But since their breakfast wasn’t very exciting, we decided on their lunch menu instead
Teh Tarik $6.40
Steak Fries $5
We were hungry and we couldn’t wait for the rest to come so we finished them even before the party arrived. The fries on the other hand, were thick cut and tasted very normal
Chilli Crab Cake $15
I thought the crab cake was pretty good, especially with the chilli crab sauce. The fried mantou chips on the other hand were just too hard
Pong Tauhu $9
Traditional Perankan soup with homemade prawn stock, pork meatballs and bamboo shoot
Infused with a deep prawn taste, the richness of the soup might be a little too overwhelming but the pork meatballs were firm and has a nice texture to it
Ayam Buah Keluak Burger $18
The patty reminded me of chicken mcnugget, the thicker version. There was little buah keluak taste as well
Beef Rendang $27
Pretty decent with fragrance of the spice and herbs mixed beautifully together
Nonya Laksa $18
The laksa was the table’s favourite. Deep richness of coconut taste with prawns, scallops and fish cake, you might be unable to resist drinking the whole bowl
Nonya Fried Rice $16
I thought the rice can be a little more fragrant and spicy. But the grilled tumeric chicken and achar was really good. Tenderised sweet chicken with an appetising side of achar complemented the rice well
Honestly, I was a little disappointed at the limited Peranakan fares offered during lunch. Where’s my chap chye? I thought perhaps dinner might be a better option to savour the the expanded menu. The food here was okay, but it will probably take a little more effort for me to go back there again
