Burnt Ends – Went with Too High Expectations

When the friend texted she got us a slot at Burnt Ends, we jumped onto the opportunity since everytime we tried to make a reservation, it seemed like there’s just no slots. Lol. But well luck would have it, we finally made it down one day for lunch

Located at Dempsey, there was no visible signboard but I guess if you know where it is, you would know where it is. We were one of the first few to arrive and we were just appreciating how tastefully decorated the place was. I really liked the interior of the place where it reminded me of us being in a barrel-like structure

Soon the crowd arrived and the restaurant soon filled up with people

Smoked Quail Egg and Caviar $18

First starter, the quail eggs. You could taste the smokiness in the eggs, followed by the soft texture of the egg white and a slight saltiness of the caviar to finish it off. It was nice though I’m not sure if I would order them again

Beef & Uni $70

The beef & uni sounded tempting but I wasn’t expecting it to be served sashimi-way. The beef took some time to chew so it didn’t exactly had a melt in the mouth kind of texture. The friends gave all their uni to me and followed up with – did it taste better? I was like no? It tasted like beef, and uni. Lol. The quality of the uni was good. It was creamy, sweet and delicious but I thought they could serve it a different style instead

Leek, Hazelnut & Black Truffle $55

The friend was attracted to the black truffle so we gave this dish a try. We had never seen a leek this big and in my friend’s comments, she said – this is the nicest vegetables she ever had. Lol. I thought this dish was worth the order. The cook on the leek with a slightly burnt taste, the flavours of the black truffle and the texture of the hazelnut worked well together

King Crab & Garlic Brown Butter $150

We asked how many legs we gonna get. Since they mentioned 2, we decided to order this as well

Burnt Ends Sourdough $9

We liked the sourdough. You could taste the sourness in it, yet the bread was soft inside and crisp on

If there’s a dish I would order again, it would be this. The sweetness of the crab meat was evident. It was satisfying to dig into the crab meat and simply enjoy them, and followed with dipping the sourdough into the sauce; it was delicious

Blackmores’ Striploin $80/100g

We were served 250g. First taste of the beef – well, it tasted like beef. I liked that it was sliced thinly and the colour of the meat inside was beautiful. But taste-wise, it didn’t blow us away. It was well, just as it was. We all agreed the greens on the side was much better than the beef itself and in my opinion if you asked me, that seemed abit sad since the protein was supposed to be the highlight

Western Plains Pork Chop $55/100g

We were served 500g and that included the weight of the bone. When they first brought the raw pork chop to our table, I thought it was a little too fatty. And when they served the cooked version, it still seemed pretty fatty to me. Lol. I had the first slice of it. I thought the pork was done well and you could taste the smokiness in it. And in comparison, we all preferred the pork to the beef. But I felt I was overwhelmed by the taste of the truffle, so much that I told the friends this is all yours. It felt too heavy on the flavours and after awhile, I just couldn’t bring myself to another slice of it

I bumped into a friend who happened to be the restaurant and he went – is the pork good?? Cos he saw the chef cooked it. And I just frowned. lol

Bone Marrow Bun $15

We had the bone marrow bun as well which they served together with our mains. I told the friends Wah. This is the nicest out of all 3. Lol. It tasted like garlic bread but more flavourful. You could taste the flavours of the bone marrow on a very soft brioche which was pretty tasty

And with that I left the friends cos I had to run. When the friend texted me to tell me how much lunch was, I was like is that in total or per pax? Lol. Trying Burnt Ends was an experience. But to me, I felt like it’s a been there, done that, okay enough. Personally I thought the price point wasn’t worth it. (We paid $360 each and that includes 1 cocktail each as well). I honestly think their starters were better than their mains and all my friends who tried Burnt Ends before agree as well. So I guess if you wanna give this place a try, maybe go with no expectations and expect to splurge. They are on the World’s Best and Asia’s Best restaurant list afterall and I know of people who seriously love Burnt Ends

I thought I was the oddball that felt being ripped off by their price too. Most of the dishes was mediocre at best during my 2 visits & both times we each paid $650/$880 each (as we had to buy wines to cover our BYOs). And my dining gang decided we had enough of Burnt Ends ever.
