It took me a very long time to get my Melbourne trip photos sorted. And I’m still in the midst of doing it. lol. Anyway, I paid a visit to Minamishima just cos friends had said Japanese in Melbourne is pretty decent and since this place has been highly raved on many platforms, I thought I should give it a try. Located at Richmond area, I was slightly late but still one of the earliest guests and had the far end of the counter table, served by Chef Minamishima himself. Yay
Minamishima only serves omakase for dinner though they had a few specials that night: Scampi Prawns, Wagyu Sashimi and Puffer Fish sushi. Well, guess what I picked?
Sake to start the dinner, though the sake here is probably not the cheapest
Japanese Ark Topped with Golden Caviar
Japanese Sticky Rice Cake
Japanese Whitefish with Black Sesame
Ika with Shiso Salt and Lime Juice
Deep Sea Snapper with Ponzu Sauce
Sweet Prawn from Western Australia
Hokkaido Scallop
Aged Flounder
Marinated Tuna
Grilled Otoro
Small White Fish with Kelp Seaweed
Smoked Bonito with Young Japanese Ginger
Japanese Mackerel
Anago
Special: Puffer Fish
Rice topped with chopped chutoro and salmon roe
Tamago
Broth made from Bonito Flakes and Kelp with Salmon and Scallop Fishball
Wagashi made from Junmai Jinjo
By the second dish, I was blown away. HA. All it takes was the first piece of sushi to know if your meal was going to be good. And I never looked back. I really enjoyed each piece of sushi – the warmth of the rice, the right amount of vinegar in the sushi rice, the cut of the fish and the overall flavour of each sushi was spectacular. And it’s honestly difficult to pick a favourite just cos each sushi was good in their own way. Though I think Minamishima can do away with all the caviar, truffle and torching. Because its fundamentals was simply good enough. I felt like this is probably a place I don’t mind returning on every visit
