Small’s – Back Again for Korean Duck Feast

I managed to make a booking for Small’s for their new menu which honestly reservations aren’t that difficult now. They were going for a Korean Duck Feast featuring Silverhill Farm Duck from Ireland and personally, I was rather excited to give it a try cos I really enjoy duck dishes. The duck menu features a salad, DIY gimbap platter, banchan, duck breasts done 4 ways and a dessert priced at $138++ and is running till end of March before they change a new menu again

Was the first to arrive!

Corned Duck Salad

The meal started with a light salad. I liked the Jeju mandarin for its sweetness and the wasabi oil that gave a little kick but I felt the shoots were a little too raw for my taste. Duck meat was tender but overall, a pretty normal salad

DIY Gimbap Platter

Then came the platter of banchan with alot of stuffs

Duck gizzards, Rilette, Fried Duck Tongue

My favourite was the duck tongue, surprisingly. I didn’t imagine I would enjoy duck tongue that much but it was deep fried really nicely with a very flavourful taste to it

The rose cream enoki was a little too cheesy for me and I thought the balance wasn’t quite there. The poached oysters were decent. You can taste the plumpness and the burst of the oyster juice as you savour into them

You can refill 3 of the banchan if you finish any of the items here. But honestly, it was really quite filling so I reckon you save some stomach space

Especially when they serve it with a huge bowl of rice. I looked at my neighbours and most of them finished most of the rice, which I was really impressed. My rice looked barely untouched even after 1 hour later

But I have to say it was really appetising with the Gim, and especially when you top it with the different banchan

The white kimchi, mushroom namul, crab stick salad and braised tofu were some of the popular refills. And I wholeheartedly agree

Smoked Duck Breast

Starting with the first duck breast dish, this was lightly smoked so you can still enjoy the taste of the duck meat. Unfortunately, I wasn’t really impressed. I could taste the light smokiness but somehow I didn’t quite enjoy the texture of the duck meat. It had the slight powdery aftertaste when you chew which wasn’t pleasant to the palate

Though it definitely went better with the lettuce and Saam Jang as the freshness of the greens help to balance the taste of the meat

Deep Fried Duck Breast

Second duck breast came in the form of Donkatsu-style, served with curry salt. We were also advised to try with the citrus aioli but I thought the simple flavour of the salt worked better. I thought the execution was done right though you could still taste the slight gamey taste at the end

Minced Duck Breast Patty Glazed w Sweet & Savory Sauce, Egg Yolk

Personally, I thought this was quite delicious. The patty was done nicely and the whole flavour settled in with each other

Braised Marinated Duck

This by far, was the dish you can taste the strong gamey-ness of the duck. It’s so strong that after one bite, I left the entire dish untouched. And given how they tried to use heavier flavours for this and you could taste the duck, I think it’s the quality of the duck itself. lol

Ginseng, Duck Leg, King Oyster Mushrooms, Garlic Chives

Ending with a stew to round off the savouries, I could appreciate the balance between the duck and the ginseng but yet, the taste of the duck itself was so strong it kinda spoil the soup. That being said, the duck leg was very tender. I thoroughly enjoyed it

Magnolia Berry Shaved Ice, Condensed Milk, Soda Water

Finishing it off with dessert which I was so full at this point.

I honestly wasn’t impressed with this menu. I had tried all the menus since their launch and I must say it was a hit and miss every time I visited. The only consistency was the banchan which they have excelled in it. So as I savoured the remaining of my meal, I had a serious thought to never return again, unless they came up with a menu which really enticed me one way or another
