There’s actually not much reviews available on Sushi Koike so I was contemplating if I should give it a try. But I decided to take a leap of faith and head down for lunch one day. Located at Circular road, it was full house for a weekday lunch. There are 3 options available for lunch menu: Sushi Sashimi $138, Omakase $168 and Special Omakase. I took the sushi & sashimi course cos well, first time there. Helmed by Chef Koike and his assistant, the pair got to work quickly to whip out piece after piece for the lunch crowd
Salad to start
Sashimi Platter: Blackthroat Seaperch, Tsubugai and Bonito
The seaperch was slightly seared with charcoal and you can taste the fattiness in it. The whelk sashimi was interesting. It was crunchy and slightly sweet. I was most impressed by the bonito. That smokiness together with the sweetness of the fish was really delicious
Ara
Don’t see this often as my first sushi piece. The fish was rather light on taste and the sweetness disappeared quickly. The rice was on the sticky side but I thought the warmth of the rice was nice
Scallop
Quite a juicy piece of scallop. The people next to me were nodding their head away
Ark Shell
This was a beautiful piece of ark shell
Chawanmushi
The chawanmushi here was light, silky and melted in your mouth quickly. They added fish slices to the steamed egg to give that extra sweetness
Otoro
After the otoro, I mentally concluded I didn’t like the rice. I find something was lacking, the texture together with the vinegar
Kampachi
Sweet Prawn
Kami
Uni Ikura Don
Miso Soup
Kinmedai
I really enjoyed the kinmedai. It had a slightly charred taste and the flavours were excellent
Anago

Toro Maki

I say the maki was the most disappointing. There was no seaweed crisp and fragrance to it and the portion of the maki felt too big for me. In all honesty, I thought I was eating those takeaway maki from supermarket

Tamago

The tamago here is literally egg. It’s neither cake-like nor custard-like. It’s really egg aka 鸡蛋, like those bento set kind of egg

Warabi Mochi
Hmm, if I were to conclude Sushi Koike in 2 words, that would be okay only. I thought the fish was decent, the cooked fish was even better but the shari.. well wasn’t to my liking. There was also little interaction between the chef and the diner probably cos he had to handle the lunch crowd. So perhaps go with a friend. You will be less lonely
