The Wagyu Griller – Serving Omi Kamei Beef from Japan

Ever since my favourite yakiniku place has won my heart, I have not ventured to try other places. But unfortunately they are also very popular these days so I couldn’t get a reservation for the friend’s birthday and she wanted to eat yakiniku. Hence we decided to check out The Wagyu Griller. They used to be at cuppage but has since moved to Killiney Road

It’s so new that it’s relatively empty inside

We were a group of 5 but their big space for large groups is not ready yet. Hearsay should be ready by end September. So we had to split among 2 tables. That was the original plan. But they probably felt sorry for us cos we had to turn to talk to each other so they decided to put the tables together so that we can talk properly. lol. But that means they were not able to grill the meat at our table. We were honestly okay with them grilling in the kitchen then bringing the dishes for us

They had a long list of selection of meats. We decided to go for the Omi Kamei experience, priced $160++ so we get to try a little of everything

Appetiser – Kimchi & Namul

Started with some appetiser, I think the kimchi and namul were okay but nothing to rave about. Still, they were good to complement the meat to wash down the oiliness

Choregi Salad

I actually quite enjoyed the salad. I thought the salad sauce was good

Rib Heart Sashimi

Sashimi was soft but I thought the yolk was a little too rich though I’m not sure if it’s done on purpose to balance the meat

Omi Kamei Beef Tartare w Caviar

Beef tartare was quite decent. It had a mix of raw tartare with a little cooked, topped with caviar to give that saltiness. Though I couldn’t quite understand the crispbread

Fatty Tongue

The meats took quite awhile to come. Like they came out to show us the cut one after another, went back in and we were like what happened to first cut – why is it not out yet?

The tongue was not bad! It had a nice bouncy texture and it goes well with a little bit of salt

Mid Tongue

The mid tongue had a more crunchy texture to it. I think we all preferred the first one

Tongue Tip

The tip tongue was good too. It was fragrant and had a little more flavour to it but I think the fatty tongue was the best out of all

Chateaubriand $48++ (per 80g)

We added on Chateaubriand since this meat wasn’t included in the set

Chateaubriand

The chateaubriand was honestly a little disappointing. Meat was served warm than hot and it was a little salty. I’m not sure if it’s being left in the kitchen for too long but for this quality of meat, I wished the outcome could be abit better

Knuckle

The knuckle has a little bit of peppery taste to it. I’m not sure if they taste like this or they had added too much pepper to it

Chuck Tender

Thought the chuck tender was quite decent. The meat was thin yet tender and you could still enjoy the flavour of it

Shoulder

Shoulder was pretty good too. I thought it was one of the better cuts

Knuckle Centre

I think the knuckle centre tasted better than the knuckle

They gave us complimentary olives as service for the long wait but.. olives is such an acquired taste! All I can say was we don’t really eat olives. lol

Rump

Rump was good too. Everyone had a reaction after eating this piece

Tri-Tip

Rump Steak

They gave this as a complimentary dish since it was the friend’s birthday. This was nicely grilled. You could taste the slight charcoal taste on the meat that was slightly salted and the meat itself was very tender

Burrata Cheese Caprese

I didn’t quite enjoy the cheese. Personally, it didn’t impress me

Beef Tripe & Honeycomb Tripe

I think the tripe goes well with the lemon dashi. The tripes have a clean taste to it though the honeycomb tasted a little crunchier

Big Intestine

This was too chewy. I didn’t finish it

Small Intestine

Beef Soup

The soup was a good end to the meal. It was very sweet, hearty and the thin meat slices were tender enough. We liked it so much the friend asked for another bowl

Hojicha

And finishing off with some dessert to end the meal

I thought generally the food was decent. There were cuts that make it, there were some that didn’t. But perhaps it’s worth going for the ala carte menu next time since they had a variety of parts to choose from. I liked that service was warm and they tried to give you an enjoyable experience and it’s definitely one to check out if you just prefer someplace more casual
