Song Gye Ok – Korean Grilled Chicken at Telok Ayer Worth A Visit

When Song Gye Ok opened at Telok Ayer, the colleagues and I were excited to give it a try. But since they served different menu for lunch and dinner, means we had to visit for lunch and dinner to try both their menu

It’s a very popular place, for both lunch and dinner. You get a queue number by scanning the QR code and apparently the QR code changes daily so it’s not like you can scan in advance

Lunch menu is quite straightforward. They only serve Samgyetang and Kalguksu and you can top up $6 for the assorted appetiser and dessert as well

Truffle SamGeTang $34

Chicken, Ginseng Root, Glutinous Rice, Leek, Jujube, Chives, Pine Nut, Truffle

I chose the truffle option among all the SamGyeTang, in which they shaved fresh truffle infront of you

Assorted Appetiser (+$6)

To be honest, the assorted appetiser was abit underwhelming but I thought it was quite value for money for the appetiser and dessert for a complete set

It was a very flavourful, hearty and warming bowl of soup. The chicken was really tender and goes very well with the salt. There was a small portion of glutinous rice inside the chicken but they also gave additional glutinous rice for those who wanted a little more of it. The pine nuts added texture which gave it a very nice crunch overall. It would be better if the weather was cooler cos eating this in this hot humid weather probably isn’t the best decision

The set was supposed to come with dessert but apparently dessert wasn’t available that day so they replaced with an iced yuzu instead, which was pretty average

But I would say this was a pretty decent bowl of SamGyeTang

And then, we made it down for dinner on another occasion which we were lucky we didn’t have to wait very long

Condiments that go with your grilled chicken

Earl Grey Highball

One of their signatures which was actually pretty good. You should give this a try if you enjoy taste of earl grey

SGO Signature Grill Platter $98

Boneless Chicken Neck Fillet, Gizzard, Heart, Softbone, Thigh, Tenders and Seasonal Vegetables

We were happy there was someone grilling for us so we just waited for the food to be ready

The grilled chicken was really good, It was juicy and tender and parts crispy. Though I think the person grilling also played an important role

Bibim Noodles $24

Gochujang Sauce, Fresh Vegetables

SGO Cheongguk Doenjang Stew $24

Rich Cheongguk Doenjang Broth, Tofu, Vegetables

Uiseong Garlic Fried Rice $20

Uiseong Garlic, Kkari Chilli, Egg Yolk, Soy Sauce

Grilled Rice Ball $8

Crispy Grilled Korean Rice Ball brushed with Soy Sauce

We really liked the garlic rice, grilled rice ball and bibim noodles, so much we ordered another portion of it, resulting in too much food. The doenjang stew on the other hand was too rich and beany in taste. It wasn’t to our liking and it was also very filling itself. But overall, it was a very good and satisfying meal just that the aircon wasn’t working and we walked out smelling like barbecue
