Burma Social – Serving Burmese Cuisine with Unique Flavours

Burma Social brings together a rich cultural heritage of Burmese cuisine, inspired from Chinese, Laos, Thai, Bangladesh, and Indian flavours. It’s not often you come across Burmese cuisine in Singapore so we decided to check out the place at Tras Street. There was quite a crowd for lunch but I liked the ambience was still comfortable enough for a lunch date without being too noisy

They serve a plate of condiments which could go with your food, and I thought that plate did prove very handy later on

The Great Salted Plum

Had a drink to start while waiting for the birthday girl

We decided to take a 4-course set lunch priced $40 and add on additional ala carte items. The set lunch consisted of one soup, salad, starter and mains. They also have a 6-course menu but I figured that would be too much to handle for us

Chef’s Special Soup

First taste of the soup? I told the friend – wow, this tasted like your Nissin cup noodles soup. lol. And she agreed. We added on the fried garlic/shallots and it did make the flavour slightly better, less cup noodle taste

Mango Salad w Sweet & Spicy Mustard Sauce

Not your typical mango salad, this came with too much mustard which we couldn’t understand why. The flavour proved to be too strong and we barely touched this

BBQ Pork Ribs w Cauliflower Puree

I didn’t enjoy the ribs. It tasted a little porky to me. I was glad there was little meat on the bones for me

Rock Shrimp Tempuras $19

This ala carte tempura proved to be the best out of all the starters. I liked the tempura was bite-sized yet you could taste every bit of the prawn and the sauce complemented pretty well

Shan Khow Suey w Added Prawns +$7

Rice Noodles in Tomato & Chick Peas Gravy, w Mixed Vegetables, Sesame

We added on the prawns else it would look very plain. And I was glad we did. I thought the bowl of noodles was better for sharing. Else the flavour did get a little heavy as you eat more of it. Would recommend pairing some of the condiments to make the noodles taste better

Ngapali Salt Baked Fish $40

Salmon Veiled in a Leaf, Salt-baked w Fermented Tea Leaves

The taste of the salmon was actually quite strong. And I didn’t really taste the tea leaves in it. To me, it was just a very normal plate of fish dish

They served a complimentary cheesecake as birthday dessert. All I can say was it was very, very sweet

I was confused by the cuisine. To be fair, I hadn’t had Burmese cuisine before so I wouldn’t know how it tasted. But if Burma Social was to give us a taste of how it’s supposed to be, then I wasn’t very impressed. I thought food was at most average overall though they were pretty generous in their portions. I guessed this was really not my cup of tea
