I first knew of Russculler Omakase cos he was invited to an event serving sushi on the spot and I thought the sushi was pretty decent so I thought of trying his full menu. The friend jio-ed than pangseh-ed but I decided to still go ahead myself. Located at Citygate, they are moving out end of March and into Joo Chiat area with a new partner

So here’s photos of the space before they are gone!

Seasonal sake

Feels like the owner likes cats alot

Ankimo
Pretty decent. Very smooth and tasty and the sauce went very well with it

Smoked Sawara, Hotaru Ika, Onion Jelly

The sawara was smoked w cherry wood to give it a smoky flavour. It was smoky but it was somewhat lacking. I thought the hotaru ika fared much better than the sawara. The hotaru ika was sweet, tender and full of flavour. The salad w onion jelly was refreshing too

Today’s Tako
Very good. It was braised very well and the tako itself was soft and tender. There was slight hint of yuzu in it as well to elevate the taste

Mikan Tai
The fish is fatty and it gets nicer as you chew on it. The shari was another story. I thought the vinegar went well with the first fish but the quality of the rice could be better. I felt that the distinctness of each grain of rice can be a little more defined

Shima Aji (Aged 12 Days)
Fish was okay but the rice was not warm enough for this

Kinmedai (Aged 11 days)
Kinmedai from Chiba, it was not bad and the rice warmth was actually okay for this

Tachiuo Karaage
Best piece so far. The tachiuo was super well fried and goes well with the daikon radish and olive oil. This was really good

Chutoro (Aged 7 days)
Chutoro is good. It’s soft and sweet and his Aka shari is really so much better in terms of flavour and depth. Apparently he has tried and tested for 3 years in order to perfect his aka shari, which was really admirable

Otoro
The otoro was very nice too. I thought the whole piece was quite balanced overall

Akami Zuke
It’s quite unusual to serve Akami after Chutoro and Otoro but chef says he thought Akami is actually more flavourful especially with zuke so he decided to serve it last. I thought the flavour was decent but the fish can be softer overall

Aji w Spring Onions & Shiso Leaf
Aji was pretty decent and it was a nice touch with the shiso leaf though the rice was a little disappointing in this case

Bafun Uni Handroll
Decent uni. Not bad at all

Miso Soup
A nice warm bowl of miso soup to wash down the meal

Futo Maki
And finishing it off with a fat maki filled with different cuts of tuna. So you get a full punch of sweetness and flavour in one mouth along with the aka shari

Tamagoyaki
Ending off with tamagoyaki that tasted a little caramelised on the side
If I were to summarise my meal here, it’s quite complicated. Priced at $200, it ain’t exactly cheap. Quality of the fish is okay but not the best. His aka shari is definitely better than his shiro shari but his shari is not consistent with every piece though I have to give credit for his tuna pieces. If you have a frequent sushiya that you visit and you are accustomed to their quality of sushi, you probably will have your own reservations coming here. But this place is one that exudes warmth and makes you feel like dining at a friend’s place. So if you don’t mind, can still give it a try
