The Black Pearl – Creative Chinese Cuisine at Odeon 333

Had the opportunity to head down to The Black Pearl for lunch one day and we were surprised by the lack of people there. But given how recent it was just opened, we also enjoyed the peace and quietness. Located at Odeon 333, it overlooks Raffles Hotel and could be a good place for business gatherings given its spacious and bright decor

Unfortunately it was raining so the view wasn’t exactly clear

BBQ Premium Iberico Char Siew $38

We were recommended the char siew and it made a grand entrance. Though they didn’t exactly pre-empt us to take a video and immediately just opened the box. lol. So anti-climax. We could smell a whiff of the smokiness though I don’t think the smokiness was infused in the char siew. I thought the flavour was good with a slight char on the meat but if it could be a little more tender, it would be perfect

Black Pearl Truffle Wild Mushroom Dumplings (3 pieces) $9

These mushroom dumplings were really good. I recommend them

Xiao Long Bao (3 Pieces) $9

The XLB were well-made and the broth was delicious

Quail Egg Spinach Siew Mai (3 pieces) $12

And so were the siew mai that came with a little surprise inside. I would order them again

Radish cake w Sakura Ebi $12

The radish cake was pan fried well but I thought it could be a little more fragrant. I liked the softness within and you could taste the texture of the smooth radish

Shunde Style Slow-cooked Fish in Thick Broth Topped with Crispy Fish Skin $22/pax

We wanted a hot soup on a rainy day and were recommended to give this a try. The thick collagen broth was really tasty. It was rich, sweet and full of umami. I thought the crispy fish skin was good but maybe they could give an extra piece 😀

Crispy Scale New Zealand Cod with Pineapple & Spices Signature Sauce $28/pax

Interesting cook on the cod cos you see this often in Amadai. The Nonya Assam was spicy and it gave a really satisfying kick but I wouldn’t say this dish was a must-order

Pan-seared Beef Short Ribs w Black Pepper $38

We thought this was decent too. The short ribs might be a little too fatty for some, but I thought it was tender enough. And I thought the black pepper was just right without too overpowering

Stir-fried Milk w Egg White & Bird’s Nest $48

This was really good. It’s a humongous piece of egg white, mixed with crab meat and bird’s nest. You can taste the sweetness within and the different layers altogether

Poached Nai Bai with Superior Broth $24

Oh, the broth was really delicious. The nai bai was just.. a bowl of normal vegetables. lol

Chef’s Signature Boston Lobster Rice $98

And topping it off with lobster rice cos the host wanted it

And this was really good. I thought the winner was the rice itself. The rice was more wet like risotto-style but yet you could evenly taste each grain of rice. You could taste the sweetness of the lobster flavour in the rice and it was really delicious

I thought the food at The Black Pearl was really decent. It’s not your normal boring Chinese cuisine but one that really surprises. They serve a dim sum brunch menu on weekends and judging from its quality, I think it’s worth a try as well

And those interested in their Business Set Lunch menu
