Kappo Shunsui – Just There for the Sake Promotion

Sorry for the lack of updates. Travelling is tiring. lol

Anyways, decided to check out Kappo Shunshui cos they were running a sake promotion where each glass goes for $3.90++ each. And on top of it, you get to try some premium sake – highlight: Juyondai (even though you only get one glass of premium sake each). Nevertheless, $3.90 per glass does sound like a cheap steal. I went for the Fuga Course $179++ which consists of a 8 course meal

The place was full and I see many order their premium sake on their first glass. In my head I was thinking – are they just gonna drink 1 glass? lol

Anyway here’s the sake promo menu. I never went to the second page since it was more on the drier side

Started with the Eikoufuji Junmai Daiginjo Black Fox which in my opinion, was just okay. They didn’t have lots of JD options on the menu. In fact, this was the only one. lol

Kickstart the dinner with something fancy visually that was a capri sour drink alike. I think the kids were more entertained

Appetiser: Aori Ika, Leek, Vinegar Miso

I liked the vinegar miso foam but the whole dish as a whole was meh. It was nothing special and the squid could have a little more flavour to it. I looked to my neighbour’s and she left hers totally untouched. Not sure if she wasn’t a fan of the squid, or the dish

Trying my first premium sake – Isojiman Gingo, that was actually not bad for a Ginjo line

Soup: Deep Fried Ebi Shinjo, Clear Broth Soup

The second dish redeemed itself. I enjoyed the prawn cake. The broth was light and sweet with hints of yuzu in it

Sashimi: Oyster, Prawns, Madai, Sawara, Chutoro, Anago Sushi

Visually, it looks pretty but the sashimi were lacklustre. The oyster had a very strong oyster taste it and it seemingly reminded me of an oyster that wasn’t very fresh. The nicest of the lot was the sawara cos it was binchotan. The rest, were not very memorable

Uni Sashimi

I wish they had just given me 2 portions of this bafun uni. I would return the sashimi platter anytime

Warm Dish: Deep Fried Buri, Turnip Sauce

I thought the deep fried yellowtail was quite good though there was a slight fishy taste towards the end. The thick turnip sauce was flavourful and comforting and was a bonus to the dish

Hiroki Daiginjo

New sake to accompany the sushi course

Hirame

Kinmedai

Hotate

Kinki

Otoro

The rice lacked character. The fish was just average and some didn’t have much taste in them. The nicest was the otoro which you could taste the sweetness and fattiness. The sushi selection was a disappointment

And finally trying the Juyondai

Unagi Handroll

First thought. Why does this unagi reminds me of those I buy from supermarket? lol. *shakes head*

A5 Miyazaki Wagyu Beef Sirloin Steak, Uni, Sukiyaki Sauce

The beef was decent. It was tender yet with some fattiness. I thought the beef went well with the uni but together with the daikon felt like a mouthful, at least for me

Nameko Mushroom Miso Soup

I skipped the Ikura rice cos I was ready to surrender but requested for just the soup. I liked the soup. It was earthy, light and easy on the stomach

Chestnut & Redbean Pie, Matcha

Mango Sorbet

And finally ending the meal with desserts

The sake promotion was a good marketing strategy. Though they literally measure the sake in a measuring glass before they pour and serve you. But the meal on a whole was.. pretty forgettable. There were ups and downs throughout the course but I think there are definitely better quality food elsewhere. Would I return? No lah, don’t waste my money
