We had my uncle’s 60th birthday celebration dinner at Chui Huay Lim Teochew cuisine, which was located at pretty secluded place I must say. The food at Chui Huay Lim was good that serves authentic Teochew cuisine and they ordered so much food it felt more like a wedding dinner than a birthday feast.
Gongfu Tea: 贵妃铁观音
We were supposed to drink this before we start the meal but it was left untouched cos everyone just enjoying their alcohol
Steamed Lotus Bun
The lotus here is different, fragrant but a little too sweet and the buns were a little dry
Teochew Cold Crab
The crabs were sweet and to the elders’ delight that they couldn’t stop raving about them
Chui Huay Lim Teochew Classic Platter (From Bottom Left to Right)
Traditional Liver Rolls, Pig Trotter’s Jelly, Prawn Rolls and Marinated Cold Jellyfish
I love the liver rolls here very much. The prawn rolls were decent, the cold jellyfish were forgettable and I’m not a fan of pig trotters’ jelly in general
Roasted Suckling Pig
Crackling skin with tender roasted meat that will get you wanting for more
Buddha Jump Over the Wall
All the delight that was inside
The superior broth was fantastic and of course not forgetting all the expensive ingredients inside that could make the buddha jump over the wall. It was a really good bowl of soup
Teochew Style Steamed Garoupa
The plums gave much acidity to the fish that will whet your appetite for more fish. The fish was sweet and fresh and it was just light on the palate
Wok Baked Lobster with Fermented Bean and Garlic
The lobster meat was succulent and sweet and the garlic was so fragrant that it tasted more like cooked nuts
Teochew Braised Goose w Beancurd
The meat was braised to the right flavour. This plate of braised meat will be the perfect choice to go with a bowl of piping hot porridge
Stir Fried King Prawns w Szechuan Peppercorn
Huge prawns accompanied with plentiful peppercorn that was sweet and crunchy
Braised Sea Cucumber with Fish Maw
This was my absolute favourite, just cos sea cucumber and fish maw are my 2 favourite items 🙂
Sugar Encrusted Deep Fried Yam Sticks
I love how the fried yam sticks are drizzled with sugar. The yam was blended well and after deep frying you can still taste the fragrance of the yam underneath the skin
Double Boiled Hashima with Red Dates and Lotus Seed
Just cos I don’t take yam paste, I went with the boring hashima which was too sweet
I love teochew food, for the freshness of ingredients and its simple cooking techniques, or maybe cos I’m a teochew-kia to start with. Chui Huay Lim serves some decent teochew fare though some of the dishes might be a little over with the flavours. But this was a good birthday feast with 12 dishes, 6 red wines, 1 white wine, 1 moscato and 2 champagnes for 11 people. And not forgetting a cake
