Hikiniku to Come – Freshly Grilled Hamburg Steak Worth The Wait

When I was in Japan, a friend wanted to try this but we didn’t have the chance. So we were glad they finally opened in Singapore and I went to try on a weekday for lunch. One needs to scan QR code to take a queue number. I reached at 12pm and the online system says it’s gonna be a 2 hour wait but the actual wait was only 1 hour, which ain’t that bad, only if you have enough time on hand

You first order at the kiosk before being led to your seat and the menu is pretty straightforward. If you order the set, it comes with 3 freshly grilled hamburger steaks, miso soup, 1 raw Japanese egg with free refill of rice, priced $27.90

Everyone is strategically placed so that you can watch the chefs at work, or if you don’t feel like talking to your companion, you can also watch how they grill the Hamburg steak too

There were instructions to guide you how to go about it

Also complimentary condiments and sides to go along as well. Personally I liked the salted lemon with green chilli though every condiment does enhance the flavour differently

Soy Sauce Flakes and Chinese Cabbage in Pickled Vinegar

Raw Kimchi $7.90

The kimchi was so-so in my opinion. It was the dry kind and quite flat in flavour

The most common word I’ve heard was Okawari as many people requested for refills of rice. Even the little boy next to me had his third refill. I was impressed. But I was just looking forward to my grilled meat cos it was taking awhile

The first piece of freshly grilled Hamburg steak!

Was told to eat a piece of the meat first, before placing it on top of rice

I have to say the meat was really good. From the grill to the tenderness of the meat, the flavour was controlled really well. I purposely pressed the meat against the rice so that the rice can also absorb the oil. You can then enjoy both the sweetness of the rice alongside the rich hearty flavour from the oil. I can understand why people request for so many refills of the rice

Second piece of meat was recommended to go with grated radish and homemade ponzu vinegar

I liked the radish with the vinegar. It has a mix of sweetness and sourness which gave a really nice balance to the meat

The second combination paired with the radish was my personal favourite as you can taste the richness of the beef but yet also a refreshing take from the ponzu on your palate

I liked how loose the meat was, but you can still taste the beef fat and juiciness as you chew into them

Third pairing – Japanese Raw Egg

There were 2 ways to eat this – dip the meat into the beaten egg or pour the egg, mixed with soya sauce over rice. Personally I preferred the former. I also tried all the different condiments to go along with the meat. But I thought the meat just on its own was enjoyable enough. I wanted to order a 4th piece of meat given my rice was only half eaten. But I decided to save it for next time. Ha

I was glad I had time to try this. Even though the wait did take awhile, but if you have time, give it a try as well!
