We thought the concept of Maggie’s looked interesting, delivering Chinese-inspired flavours in a fun, playful manner. The intimate restaurant was loud with a retro glam and people specially dressed up to dine there. But we never made much effort. lol. After all, food is more important right?

The place did get pretty packed after awhile so volume could also get quite loud

Mango Margarita $23
We started with some cocktails while waiting for the rest of the party to arrive but I had to say, the cocktails were so so. Like the flavours were there but there wasn’t much taste of the alcohol itself. In the end we went for round 2 and round 3

“Golden Gun” Cigars (2pcs) $18
Bigeye Tuna, Spring Onion, Creme Fraiche, Olive Leaves. Sumac
Moving on to the food, the cigars were known to be one of their popular items so we had to order it. We loved the crispy texture with the creamy tuna and thought it had a nice balance overall

Charred Kung Pao Pastrami Cabbage $23
Beef Pastrami, Grilled Cabbage, Whipped Tofu, Dried Chili
Wah. Salty. lol. I’m not sure what gave the dish the saltiness but this would go well with a bowl of white rice

Roasted Pomfret $36 (half)
De-boned Pomfret, Green Peppercorn Salsa Verde, Slivered Potato Salad
The only dish that wasn’t salty. Fish was grilled well but I thought the salsa verde was a little too much. It lacked a little bit of the citrusness to give it a more cohesive flavour

Secreto Iberico Chop $38
Banjing Pepper, Scallion, Woodear, Uncle’s Secret Tangy Jus
The pork was a little porky in my opinion. The meat had a slight chewy texture and the sauce was also slightly salty

Maggie’s Southern Dirty Rice $35
Duck Liver Sausage, Monkfish Liver Parfait, Aged Yellow Wine
Wow, this was also salty. But I thought the sausage gave a very nice fragrant taste to the dish

Maggie’s 8 Treasures $16
Glutinous Rice, Date Gelato, Red Bean Cloud, Longans, Jujubes
Ending with a dessert to wash away all the saltiness. The red bean cloud was good and we liked the glutinous rice ice cream
If I were to summarise the whole meal in one phrase, it was very salty. And coming from me who generally could accept a higher level of saltiness in my food, this meal was another level. Truth to be told, I likely wouldn’t be returning anytime soon
