Yakitori Mook – Most Value-For-Money Omakase Yakitori in Seoul

Decided to visit one of the Black Spoon vs White Spoon restaurants when I was in Seoul and while looking at Catchtable, Yakitori Mook seemed the easiest to book so here I was! The restaurant is located near Hongdae area but it was like a 15 mins kind of walk. My reservation was at 7pm but surprisingly, the restaurant was full

If you don’t know the chef, he’s Chef Kim Byoung-mook that appeared on the Black spoon team on Culinary Class Wars and had been on Michelin Guide consecutively

The chef wasn’t there, but the restaurant was run by his team. The guests were mostly local but I overheard a table of foreigners. There was a staff that was fluent in English so he helped with the introduction of the dishes

Each guest is required to order a glass of alcohol, so do note

They had 2 seatings available. One at 5pm (KRW35,000) and the other at 7pm (KRW45,000). The menu is omakase-style but you can choose to add on if your stomach can still digest more food

Cabbage and Chicken Breast with Chives

The meal kickstart with 2 appetisers. Was abit offended when they served raw vegetables but okay, the cabbage really had the natural sweetness in it, which was somewhat nice for a change. It was raw, but actually pretty edible. The chicken breast was a cold appetiser. The sauce was good and the meat tender

Smoked Chicken Tenderloin

The smoky taste was pretty evident but I thought the chicken itself a little bland. So you can pair it with the condiments served along. I thought it went well with the salt/wasabi

Chicken Leg with Green Mustard Salad

This was.. very normal. lol

Chicken Thigh with Spring Onion

The thigh was really crispy and juicy, like the juice really burst and filled your entire mouth

Cherry Tomato

Not bad. I liked the grilled taste of it. The outer skin had a nice touch of saltiness and the tomato juice burst into your mouth when you bite into it

Fried Chicken Leg with Sweet & Sour Sauce

This was pretty good. Crispy on the outside, tender inside and the entire chicken soaked up the entire sauce which was actually appetising

Chicken Wing

It was served so hot. I thought it was a little on the blander side. It was not just me. Cos I saw everyone else adding condiments to their chicken wings. lol. Honestly it was grilled well but I preferred my wings a little charred and a little crispier

Chicken Liver Pate

The pate was a little rough on the edges but it had a nice flavour to it and it went well on the palate. And it really went well with the mulberry that was so sweet. It was so good the guy next to me ordered a second serving of this, double the portion. lol

Tsukune, served with egg

Very decent tsukune. But I thought the egg was better. It wasn’t fully raw but somewhat a little cooked so it went well with the tsukune

Miso Soup

I had never seen a miso soup with so much ingredients inside. It was comforting, filling and heartwarming

Grilled Rice Cakes with Shiso

Yums. That’s all I can say. It was crisp on the outside and you could taste the shiso and honey flavour, yet you could still taste the soft rice cake beneath

Gizzard

Very good. It had a nice crunch to it and it was juicy

Heart

This was the best heart I’ve eaten. It was so tender. The chickens here must had a weak heart. lol

Korean Rice Cake Soup

Served in a hearty chicken broth, this was a good end to the meal

I was legit full by the 4th dish. I don’t know how people could add on ala carte and end off with shin ramen (which apparently was their specialty). So I was really struggling at this point

Ending off with shiso sorbet which I was so glad it was the end to the meal

I was charged KRW35,000 for the meal. When staff 1 saw the amount, he verified with staff 2 and staff 2 said yes. So to only pay KRW35,000 (which is about SGD35) for this omakase meal, I say it was so value-for-money. I think you can never find this standard for this price anywhere. Honestly, I wouldn’t say it’s top-grade yakitori but I really think it’s not bad so I would ask anyone to give this a try as well
