Homura by Kai – Delicious Grilled Dishes by Chef Issey at Orchard Plaza

The place at #03-16 has seen some changes, first with Kai Yakitori moving to #04-23/24 with a new concept and now Chef Issey Araki has moved in, rebranding to Homura by Kai. Serving both omakase and ala carte, we went for the omakase. Or rather, I decided that we shall try their omakase menu instead. lol

The place wasn’t packed on weekends surprisingly but later we learnt there was last minute cancellations. Still, I liked that they didn’t have 2 seatings and we don’t need to be rushed away

Their special ala carte menu, aside from what they have on their main menu

And sake list

Decided to get this in the end since I recognised the bottle. I wanted to start first since I anticipated the friend would be 20 minutes late, as usual. But hey, I was pleasantly surprised he over-delivered (Please keep up the good job)

And that means, our dinner can start on time. Yay

Sawara Sushi

This was so delicious. The fragrance of the sawara, and the sweetness wrapped with the seaweed was undeniably good

Maguro w Nori Sauce

I thought the quality of the maguro was decent, but the nori sauce made it even more outstanding. The nori sauce was deep in flavour and full of umami and it really brought out the sweetness of the tuna

Fugu Shirako from Yamaguchi

The Fugo Shirako was grilled so well you could taste the char on the outside with the skin so taut but yet the inside was a melt-in-the-mouth kind of texture and a little squeeze of lime on top to bring out the balance of sweetness and acidity

Nodoguro handroll

Ooh, my favourite fish!

Unagi w Daikon

The unagi was done well but thought the daikon was even more impressive. The finely diced daikon bits left a lingering sweetness, washing off the heavy flavours of the unagi

Duck, Yam, Homecooked Dashi

Wah. This soup. So much flavours in one. Can I have another bowl of this please?

Tachiuo Donnabe w fresh vegetables

And ending off with my favourite donnabe. You could tell how well the fish was done from the colours

So good, the friend finished everything

Chicken Wings $14

Cos I wanted to try the chicken wings. I don’t have much recollections of it to be honest. lol. It’s either their omakase menu stood out so much or we drank alot that night

Snow Crab Cream Croquette $12

But the croquettes were quite good. Love how the crab cream oozing out from a nice crisp outer shell, drizzled with a sweet sauce to wrap it all up

Warabi Mochi

I say, this is a dessert you definitely won’t mind having

And ending off with a birthday dessert with a birthday song sang very happily by Chef Issey

This wasn’t the first meal I had by Chef Issey Araki but probably one I thought it was the best so far. His grilled dishes are outstanding and made me wanna go back again to try others, perhaps ala carte this time. Though I felt he was a little quieter than usual, or maybe just focusing on making his food. lol. But at least now I know where to go if I just want a good bowl of claypot rice
