Katachi Sushi Bar – Sushi Recommended by Japanese

This place was recommended by my Japanese acquaintance so I decided to check it out one day. Located at Orchard plaza (which I have now aimed to try every single restaurant in there lol), the sushi bar was quite empty when I visited. In fact, I was the only one there for a meal and the rest of the crowd started coming in when I was leaving so I had full undivided attention

I’m not sure if there has been a change of chef but the chefs were different when the friend and I visited on separate occasions

Menu for those interested. I went for Fuji just cos there was uni

Appetiser: Tako with Vinegar, Spinach, Fish w White Radish

The octopus was rather chewy. Spinach was pretty normal but I thought the fish was actually quite nice

Omelette (served hot)

I was rather amused they served omelette roll. Maybe they decided to do a cheaper version of tamago-yaki. And well, it tasted like omelette but the sweeter version

Sashimi: Maguro, Hirame and Sawara

I liked the Hirame. You could taste the freshness and sweetness in it. The Spanish Mackerel was not aged enough. The Maguro tasted better when you added more soya sauce to it. Else it was pretty flat on its own

Tai

Not bad. I liked the portion of the rice to fish. The proportion was done pretty nicely. And the touch of yuzu kosho gave a slight kick towards the end

Shima Aji

You could taste the fattiness followed by the sweetness of the shima aji. It was pretty decent

Aji

The flavour was lacking. The spring onions saved the day thought there was a slight sweetness of the fish towards the end

Ika

So pretty. And it’s really good. Loved the texture of the ska and it went nicely with the yuzu

Scallop w Truffle

The truffle hits the palate. And the sweetness of the scallop filled the entire mouth It was rather satisfying

Aburi Aka Ebi

It was a little underwhelming. I could smell the aburi but the prawn not sweet enough. Though overall, the texture was not bad

Kinmedai

There was a slight fattiness to it which was delightful

Tsuke Maguro

The quality of the Maguro was lacklustre. It’s definitely not my favourite piece

Otoro

Pretty decent You could taste a teeny weeny bit of sinew though overall I say the otoro was not bad

Ikura

I enjoyed the sweetness of the ikura but I had to say the wasabi went through my nose

Uni

Anago

It was a surprise with this. The texture was good and the sauce was evenly coated. I actually didn’t mind another piece of this

Toro Taku

I love it when the meal ends with a good maki. This was actually quite nice. The flavour was balanced and I liked the crunch of the pickles

Fish Bone Soup

Hearty, thick and warms the stomach

Shime Saba

I love it when the chef gives me extra sushi on the house. lol And this was by far the best. The Saba was fatty and you could smell the spring onions. The whole flavour worked and it was so delicious

I think for the price point, the quality was actually quite decent. Though there were hits and misses, but overall I don’t mind returning if I had sushi cravings. Now, on to the next hunt at Orchard plaza
