Went to check out the recently opened Unagi Yondaime Kikukawa at Shaw Centre. The Michelin-listed unagi restaurant hails from Nagoya and is known for its fluffy texture-like eel. Maybe cos the restaurant is new, there seems to be a huge crowd that day wanting to try its famed unagi

But I guess you can wait for the hype to die down before going down to try

Umaki Eel Rolled in Egg $12

Assorted Tempura $20

We got the egg roll and tempura as sides while waiting for the main dish to be served. I liked the egg roll. You can taste the sweetness and fragrance of the eel in the egg which makes it pretty delicious. The tempura on the other hand was nothing to rave about

Ippon Hitsumabushi Set $50

It took awhile for the unagi to be served. Grilled over bincho charcoal, you can taste the smokiness in the unagi with the skin crisp and fragrant but yet the the meat was soft and fluffy. The unagi itself was delicious. The tare itself was sweet and flavourful but not overpowering so you get a good balance overall. Served in a special Utsuwa, the vessel retained the heat so you can enjoy the meal in warmth constantly

I also got the smaller set. The slight difference is the portion and the soup else unless you are really hungry, you can just get the Hitsumabushi set. I preferred the rice with added soup for the softer and more delicate flavour, just as a personal preference

Personally, the unagi itself was good. But it’s not exactly the cheapest. And I wouldn’t return so often for them not cos it’s not good, but there are probably cheaper and also rather decent unagi places as well. But if you like to treat yourself to some quality unagi, you can also give them a try
