Sushi To Sumi – More Magic Needed at This Standing Sushi Bar

The colleague wanted to go Sushi To Sumi again, after trying it for the first time and left feeling impressed. So she jio-ed us along for the second time seeing we also love Japanese food. Located at Republic Plus, one could easily miss this place if you are not familiar with the area. (PS. the soup store on the same level is great too! Okay, I digress) Headed by Japanese, served by Japanese, the concept is a little different here. There are no physical seats. So you eat the sushi standing. And you will probably finish your course under an hour. So it’s great for lunch crowds where you don’t have a 3-hour lunch to enjoy. They have 3 different menus for you to choose from and we went with the most basic priced $38++ with options to add on ala carte sushi if you wish to

Seasonal Fish for the day

Your menu will be displayed here

Gari

First taste. Sweet with a little spicy aftertaste

Madai

Could really taste the shari with this. I thought the rice was not bad. It had the right stickiness texture and you could taste the vinegar in it. Not so much thoughts on the fish though

Kanpachi

Grilled Hokkaido Squid

Tasted like squid. I found this a little too random

Tobiko

The tobiko was really salty. We had to wash it down with tea

Ishidai

Nishimera Salmon from Miyazaki

I thought the salmon was pretty good. It was smooth and sweet and left a lingering flavour on your palate

Shima Aji

It had the taste of the umami towards the end but I thought the wasabi was a little strong, so much it overwhelmed me for 2 seconds. lol

Abura Karei (Japanese Flat Fish)

This tasted as flat as the name could get

Aji $6

Add on the Aji cos I love Aji. It was.. okay

Ishi

I guess the handroll stood out among all. Though sadly, it had a little bits of bones in it

Negi Toro Handroll $20

The negitoro tasted decent though not very memorable

Nodoguro $20

The nodoguro would be my pick if I were to choose a favourite

And ending it with soup which smelled like prawn soup but tasted so rich and flavourful. I wished they had given a bigger portion of this. lol

If I were to summarise my meal in 2 words, it would be pretty average. But for the price you pay (minus the add ons cos I was greedy), I cannot complain. They had good shari as its base but most of the fish I felt tasted lacking. Or perhaps it was the day I went they just didn’t have good seasonal fishes. The colleague told me – I felt like the first time was better. This time round it seemed to lose its magic. I laughed. Yes, magic in a sushi meal is very important. That is what that will make you keep going back. But for anyone who doesn’t wish to spend so much on a sushi meal, it’s a joint that is welcomed by many Japanese natives so I guessed it’s still worth checking it out to a certain point
