Sushi Michi – Leaving an Unpleasant Taste in My Mouth

First found out about this place when I walked past and saw there was a new sushi place next to my favourite joint so I jio-ed the friend to go down and try. The restaurant isn’t big yet they didn’t have alot people on the weeknight we visited and upon chatting with the chefs, they mentioned some days they just stood around till 9pm. Okay, wow. I gave them the benefit of doubt that perhaps they were still relatively new so they probably needed some time to pick up regulars

Anyways I was excited to get my dinner started

I was actually contemplating the premium omakase cos the latter includes chutoro and otoro while the standard omakase only has akami and chutoro but we went for the standard one in the end. Cos sometimes when a place is too new, I’m also a little skeptical

Ladyfingers w Ikura

First dish, pretty normal or rather, nothing special. It’s probably something you can make at home yourself too

Onsen Tamago w Soba Sauce

I thought the combination was quite nice. But maybe they could have substitute it with ponzu sauce instead. The soba sauce was a little salty I felt, and the friend also agreed

Their gari was on the spicy side and I felt that the texture wasn’t great but the friend seemed to like it alot

Flatfish

First piece. Uninspiring, for the better lack of word. The rice was flat, like it lacked character. I thought I was eating normal Japanese rice. Fish was pretty average as well. I couldn’t get the name of the fish in Japanese and I didn’t bother to after eating as well

Shima Aji w Spring Onion

The colour of the shima aji was a little.. questionable. I liked the fragrance of the spring onion but I thought the overall balance of the sushi could be better

Hirame w Angawa

The third one was slightly better. I actually quite liked this. The overall flavour worked and it did balance out the rather plain shari

Kanpachi w Truffle

The taste of truffle elevated the fish slightly though the friend commented it’s a little oily overall. Then the chef said, oh – some people liked it with lots of truffle and they wanted it with more truffle. I think the friend and I just looked at each other and went – they come here eat sushi or drink truffle?

Yuko Shuji Fudai w Kombu and Oba

I thought the oba leaf added surprise to the sushi and it made it more palatable. Then the chef asked how was the food so far and I told him his shari lacked character, like it’s really plain. Then he got so defensive and said the fish is more important when it comes to eating sushi. And if I said rice was important, why did I ask for less rice. When I heard that I was like.. What’s the point of asking feedback when you were not going to take into consideration what your customers say. Must as well don’t ask. So, I just shut up after that #ireallyoffended

Madai w Lime Jelly

The friend told him she couldn’t taste the lime in the jelly, and the chef said some of the customers said it’s too lime-y. The friend turned to me and was like you tasted the lime? I just shook my head. I guessed I didn’t really feel like talking after that

Masudai

Ao Nori

Aburi Hotate

Aburi Aka Ebi

Why do they need to aburi the prawn? I had no idea. Maybe cos the prawn wasn’t sweet enough so they need to make up for it. And I felt like they added so much sauce it tasted salty towards the end

Chutoro w Japan Ginger

I thought the chutoro w ginger was decent and I liked it. But half of me wanted the meal to end already

Aburi Otoro

When I saw he aburi the otoro, I shook my head. Lol. So. Wasteful

Chopped Toro w Bafun Uni

I felt like the seaweed brought the whole dish down. Though the chef was boasting about how beautiful his uni looked and I just smiled patronisingly (and was also rolling my eyes inside)

Tamago

Literally, tamago

Fish Bone Soup

The soup was quite flavorful. The chef told us that their boss only came down to eat the tamago and drink the soup everytime she visited and it irritated him. Well, it says alot isn’t it?? I could fully emphathize with his boss

And lastly, black sesame icecream

Well, suffice to say – it wasn’t the most pleasant experience I had. When we left, the chefs asked if we would return. WELL, I GUESS NOT? I had intially wanted to give Yuta a try cos they are under the same company but after my experience with Sushi Michi, maybe not so soon. I could still feel my irritation while writing this. So, till next time I guess

Hi Iris. I was at Kyuu new place in city gate when they had a opening promotion of $99 for their $159 Omakase. John the resident chef there was really good. I like their gari and shari. Everything was on point. Try and let me know how you find it. Promo is over though.

Thanks for the review. Lucky i never try after knowing they are from the same group as yuki which had pretty low reviews. Katachi downstairs was great as you had tried previously.
